Mike Wood is a seasoned traveller whose travel and exploration experiences are nothing short of extraordinary. With a passion for adventure than spans over four decades, Mike has journeyed to every continent. Some of his most memorable adventures include:
- Since moving to Perth and owning the Mountain Designs Outdoor stores in WA, he has led annual trekking groups to Nepal – including the Annapurnas, Everest, Naar Phu, Manaslu, Langtang, Jugal Himal, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, and Kanchenjunga
- Lived in Nepal for six years, leading Himalayan treks (Everest region) and white-water rafting expeditions (Sun Khosi River)
- Spent four seasons in the Indian Himalaya, leading treks in Kashmir and Ladakh for Peregrine
- Voyaged to Antarctica nine times aboard multiple ships, mostly recently the Ultramarine
- Sea kayaked nine times in Antarctica including twice at South Georgia
- A three Arctic Islands voyage (Svalbard, East Greenland, Iceland) also cruised past Jan Mayen
- Land based circumnavigation of Iceland
- Climbing Kilimanjaro - twice
- Exploring the old slave forts of Ghana
- Trekking in Patagonia eight times
- Iguazu Falls, Brazil and Argentina
- Led a group through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia on the Transcaucasian Trail and the Upper Svaneti Valley
- Led two Jhomolhari Base Treks in Bhutan, including a visit to the ‘Black Necked Crane Festival in eastern Bhutan
- Sailed on a charter through the Cyclades Islands in Greece
- A two week trip ‘Cycling in the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania’
- Climbing on Aconcagua
- A ten day ‘Scenic Fjords of Norway’ trip
- A safari in South Africa
- Driving a truck through Tunisia
- An extensive 3 week trip in Peru
- Trekking the Inca Trail
- Trekking in the European Alps, the Dolomites and the Amalfi Coast
- Walking the Camino de Santiago three times and the Portuguese Coastal Camino twice.
- Walking the entire 1,000km length of the Bibbulmun Track
- Skiing in Hokkaido, Japan
- Sea kayaking in places as diverse as Fiji, Antarctica, Canada and the Southern Ocean
- Walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea
Mike kicked off his travel career began in 1980 after being a part of the first Australian Himalayan Kayak Expedition to kayak the descent of the Sunkoshi River in Nepal, stretching from Tibet to India. Inspired by this trip, he made the decision to stay in Nepal as an expedition guide for the next three years. He then joined the original Peregrine team setting up new operations in Nepal and was involved in training local Nepali guides for a further three years. After returning to Western Australia, Mike owned and operated the Mountain Designs adventure stores in WA for 24 years before purchasing Peregrine Travel Centre WA in 2008 and adding consultant and agency owner to his CV. Throughout the years, Mike has reminded active in hosting and leading adventure travel groups contributing to his extensive and unique experience within the travel industry.
Mike’s passion for trails extends beyond participation in the physical journey. As Chairman of the Bibbulmun Track Foundation since its inception in 1996, he believes in visiting as many of the world’s long-distance trails as possible to bring back knowledge to WA.
